Why UFO high bay must CRI>80?
1. Legal Basis for CRI ≥ 80
Under the current (EU) 2019/2020 (replacing the older EU 1194/2012):
- General indoor lighting (including UFO high-bay lights, LED bulbs, panels, etc.): CRI (Ra) ≥ 80
- Only outdoor / industrial functional lighting is allowed a lower limit of ≥ 65
CRI ≥ 80 is a mandatory requirement for CE certification and market access in the EU. Products failing to meet this standard cannot be cleared through customs or sold.
2. Why 80, not 70 or 90?
1) Visual Health and Minimum Quality Standard
CRI 80 marks the threshold for good color rendering:
- 80–90: Good color rendering, accurately reproducing the R1–R8 basic color spectrum (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, violet, etc.), suitable for most indoor applications including offices, homes, supermarkets, workshops, and warehouses.
- Below 80 (70–79): Moderate color rendering, resulting in dull, distorted colors, increased visual fatigue, and higher risk of color misidentification (e.g., for materials, labels, safety signs), which conflicts with the EU’s healthy lighting philosophy.
- Above 90: High color rendering, reserved for premium / professional environments (museums, healthcare, cosmetics) as a recommendation, not a mandatory requirement.
2) Balance Between Technology and Cost
Since the 2010s, LED technology has matured, making CRI 80 a cost-effective, mass‑producible standard with reliable efficiency and lifespan.Mandating CRI 90 would significantly increase costs and reduce energy efficiency, conflicting with the EU’s goals of eco‑design, energy saving, and affordability.
3) Single Market and Consumer Protection
A unified CRI ≥ 80 requirement eliminates national discrepancies within the EU, ensuring consumers receive a basic level of color rendering quality.It prevents low‑quality, low‑CRI products from disrupting the market and protects visual health and product safety.
4) Alignment with International Standards
Based on CIE 13.3 (International Commission on Illumination), CRI 80 is a globally recognized minimum for indoor lighting, facilitating mutual recognition and export compliance.
3. Why UFO High‑Bay Lights Especially Require CRI ≥ 80
UFO high‑bay lights are widely used in large spaces such as factories, warehouses, and logistics centers:
- Clear color recognition is essential for materials, equipment labels, and safety warnings.
- Workers operate for extended periods, so CRI 80 helps reduce visual fatigue and improve productivity and safety.
- The EU classifies these products as general indoor lighting, making CRI ≥ 80 mandatory.
